Global Health Initiative

The mission of the Emory Global Health Institute is to advance Emory University’s efforts to improve health around the world. Established in September 2006 as a university-wide initiative, the Emory Global Health Institute supports Emory faculty, students, and alumni in their work to find solutions to critical global health problems.

Emory-Tibet Science Initiative
ETSI rapidly has expanded the horizons of knowledge for both monastics and Western scholars. Emory’s commitment to creating an ongoing and sustainable program realizes His Holiness’s vision of a comprehensive science education within the monastic curriculum. By bringing together the tools of modern science with time-tested Buddhist contemplative knowledge, more can be done to help relieve suffering around the world.

Healthcare Innovation Program
The Healthcare Innovation Program (HIP) is an interactive virtual network that provides information, resources, and community connectivity to support and enhance innovation in healthcare research, education, and service. Key topics include quality, cost and access to health services across the contexts of providers, payers, and recipients. The Healthcare Innovation Program is supported by the Woodruff Fund of the Emory University Woodruff Health Sciences Center, and the NIH funded Atlanta Clinical & Translational Science Institute (ACTSI). The program is focused on the activities at Emory University, Georgia Tech, Morehouse School of Medicine, and local ACTSI partners including Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA), Grady Health System, and the Atlanta VAMC

Health Systems Institute
The joint Emory/Georgia Initiative Health Systems Institute's research objectives are to advance fundamental knowledge of issues central to the delivery of healthcare services through better understanding of the efficient allocation of health resources, appropriate uses of those resources, and the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of innovative healthcare delivery systems that integrate state-of-the-art information, communication, decision support, and biomedical technologies.The Health Systems Institute's research objectives are to advance fundamental knowledge of issues central to the delivery of healthcare services through better understanding of the efficient allocation of health resources, appropriate uses of those resources, and the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of innovative healthcare delivery systems that integrate state-of-the-art information, communication, decision support, and biomedical technologies.

Predictive Health and Society Initiative
Predictive Health and Society focuses on a model of predictive health which will be a revolutionary approach that moves the practice of medicine from a reactive, disease-focused system to a proactive health-focused system. This initiative integrates research, scholarship, and education in an innovative effort aimed at revolutionizing care of people to define, preserve, and prolong the health of individuals and of society.

The key points that define this initiative and describe the planned activity and focus are:

  • Define and measure health using cutting-edge, basic, and applied scientific research
  • Discover optimal biomarkers of health and understand their interrelationships
  • Determine the best interventions to optimize health throughout an individual's or a population's lifetime
  • Determine, using insight from scientific research, ethics, economics and policy, how best to apply a predictive health system to individuals and populations

Race and Difference Initiative
The mission is to promote understanding of and to generate new knowledge about race and other forms of human difference (class, gender, religion, and sexuality), in particular the way they intersect in our complex and rapidly diversifying society. The initiative is interested in how social differences intersect at the level of individual identities as well as how systems of social distinction shape modes of knowing, processes of inclusion and exclusion, acts of representation, and organizational practices.
Science, Ethics and Society Initiative

As an exciting collaborative venture between the Center for Ethics and the Program in Science and Society, the goal of SESI is to capture and focus the growing interest and energy among students and the greater community with regard to issues in scientific development, including the impact of modern genetic technology on health and food; the role of society, religion, politics, and economics in science; and questions of environmental sustainability of environmental sustainability.
